Tang Xiangru, Diploma in Tourism Management with Merit, Tang Xiangru was a student at Temasek Polytechnic from 2000—2003. She graduated with a Diploma in Tourism Management with Merit and received the Singapore Tourism Board Course Gold Medal for being the top student of her cohort. Xiangru graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Travel Industry Management with Highest Honors and Minor in Economics at the University of Hawai‘i at Mânoa in August 2006. She also finished her three years in university with a perfect GPA score. After obtaining her Bachelors’, Xiangru joined Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc as a revenue management trainee at Sheraton Kauai Resort in Hawai‘i. This one-year training not only equipped her with strong revenue management skills in areas such as forecasting and pricing skills, but also developed her leadership potential through assisting her Director in managing the hotel’s Reservations department. This experience won Xiangru the “Manager of the Quarter” award, which was nominated by the hotel’s associates and selected by the hotel’s management team. Having her eyes set on the rapidly growing Asian market, Xiangru quickly proved to be ready for her new assignment in China as a Revenue Manager at the newly opened Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel. Her intensive training and strong team support helped Xiangru settle well into her new position and saw the hotel outperforming its competitors consistently. Just after 6 months, Xiangru was promoted to the Director of Revenue Management at this property. Xiangru’s interest in marketing and strategic planning traces back to her three internships in school. During her final year in TP, Xiangru spent a semester in the Sales and Marketing department and Reservations department at Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. The seven-month experience strengthened her customer service skills as well as exposed her to developing marketing plans. Keen to explore tourism planning at a national level, Xiangru completed a 10-week internship at the Singapore Tourism Board in 2004. As an intern in the Plans Analysis and Integration department, Xiangru helped her team in formulating a roadmap for Singapore’s travel industry. A year later, her experiences in Singapore earned her a six-month internship at the Hawai’i Visitors and Convention Bureau. Rebecca Ashley Wong, Diploma in Tourism Management with Merit, Immediately after graduating from TP, Rebecca joined The Ritz-Carlton Millenia (Singapore) as a Quality Executive, completing two quality projects driven by The Ritz-Carlton’s head office in North America. After a short stint (July 2001 – October 2001) at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, she joined The Fullerton Singapore as a Hostess in the Town Restaurant and Bar where she learnt the ropes of food and beverage management. In September 2002, she headed off to the University of Surrey (UniS) in the United Kingdom to pursue her undergraduate studies in International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Rebecca graduated with first class honours in June 2004. Rebecca is currently at Singapore Airlines as a Station Manager based in Athens, Greece. She was promoted to this position in July 2006. Prior to her Athens posting, Rebecca was the Assistant Station Manager in Frankfurt, Germany. A position once dominated by males, a full-fledged Station Manager requires 6-8 months training in all the various aspects of airport and customer management as well as an 8-10 month overseas posting. She has enjoyed every moment of her training, which runs the gamut from obscure topics such as Cargo Handling, Dangerous Goods Regulations and Weight and Balance (balancing the aircraft), to straightforward courses such as Basic Industry Training and several soft-skills modules. Glendon Oon Chien Ming, Diploma in Tourism Management, After graduation from TP, Chien Ming served 2.5 years of national service in 3 SIR Singapore. Immediately after his National Service, Chien Ming was employed as a Management Trainee, specializing in Food and Beverage at The Westin Stamford and The Westin Plaza, Singapore (Currently the Swissotel, The Stamford and Raffles, The Plaza). After 8 months in the first year of training as a MT, he was promoted to Assistant Restaurant Manager in charged of the Kopi Tiam Restaurant. After 2 years of service in the Westin Singapore, he went to The University of New South Wales, Australia to pursue his undergraduate studies in Hospitality, Tourism and Marketing. He was at UNSW from 2002 – 2004. After graduation from UNSW, he was offered a position of Restaurant Manager in Asia’s first W Hotel in Seoul, South Korea. W Hotel is a hip hotel brand under the Starwood Hotels & Resort Group. There, he was soon promoted to Restaurants Manager and had 2 restaurants and 1 F&B retail outlet under his care. After a 1 year stint in W Seoul, Chien Ming joined the Intercontinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong as the Assistant Food and Beverage Manager for another 1 year stint. Not wanting to miss out on all the actions in the fast rising hospitality industry in mainland China, Chien Ming took up an offer to rejoin the Starwood group of hotels as the Assistant Food and Beverage Director in China’s flagship Westin hotel, the Westin Bund Centre Shanghai. Charlene Hendricks, Diploma in Hospitality Management, Immediately after graduation, Charlene was employed as a sales coordinator at the Singapore Marriott Hotel. She is currently pursuing her undergraduate studies at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) on a part-time basis. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing in June 2009. Charlene started working at the Singapore Marriott Hotel as a Sales Coordinator assisting 4 sales managers. Managers at the Hotel were impressed with her job knowledge and ability to pick things up quickly and knew about her interest in moving up and out of her current position into the Wedding Team. To show that she was able to contribute to the company positively, one of the things she did was to volunteer her weekends to help the Wedding Team out during the various Wedding Shows and workshops, she even helped to close some deals. They were impressed with her observations and contributions after being just 8 months with the Hotel and the recommendations she gave eventually improved the efficiency of the Sales Department. She was officially promoted after 2 years of service at the Hotel to be the Wedding Sales Executive. In this new capacity, Charlene deals with the wedding market and negotiates wedding deals with potential couples. She plays an important role in setting the projected revenue for her market at the Hotel. The Hotel has just undergone a renovation to their Pool Side and has added 10 new rooms to their inventory. They have also included a Pool Terrace Pavilion, the perfect venue for a Wedding Solemnization or close-knit dinner function.
