Calvin Goh Swee Boon Team Temasek has won the 4th Brunswick Collegiate League for the fourth year in a row, and once again, we have an A&F student in the winning team – Calvin Goh Swee Boon. We caught up with this soft-spoken young man who is in the midst of his final year internship at IRAS. “It feels good to be able to win, but to be able to win it with the team two times in a row makes it even more special,” Calvin explains. Emerging as victors this year was made more remarkable by the fact that unlike other teams, none of the Team Temasek members are national players, causing the media to label the team “underdogs”. But Calvin definitely doesn’t think this is an issue. “What we lack in skill and experience relative to the national players, we more than make up in teamwork and chemistry. I believe Team Temasek has always been able to attract a strong pool of bowlers who are capable of competing with the other teams.” In fact, Calvin believes so much in his team that he proclaims that everyone is a “star” in the team. “That is why we are able to retain the title of champion for 4 consecutive years.” An article in the New Paper also referred to Calvin as the “star bowler”, a title he vehemently denies. In fact, the modest twenty-year-old claims that bowling is a sport anyone can excel. But as with many other things in life, “it takes time and dedication to do well. Lots of training and interest in the sport helps too.” When asked what got him started on bowling in the first place, this is what we found out: bowling runs in his family! “I got into bowling at a very young age; my father was the one who taught me how to bowl. Bowling was part of family leisure time every weekend. My brother was my first role model when I started bowling. But unfortunately he has stopped bowling.” Sadly, Calvin will be leaving the school and the team next year and will be “bowling for different teams”. He will miss the joy and laughter most. “The friends I have made in my time in TP and the team will be the ones I will miss.” But he graciously adds, “I really hope the team will win more trophies and more competitions, and wish them the best of luck for the competitions next time.” Looking back, Calvin is grateful to have joined TP. “TP has taught me a lot - the classes and the teachers. TP has also helped me make lots of good friends - from course mates to bowling mates. It has been a memorable 3 years in TP.” In fact, Calvin attended school at Serangoon Junior College before coming to TP. He chose A&F because “my mum is an accountant and I always wanted to be like her. So being in A&F helps me with my goal of being an accountant.” |
