Diploma in Logistics and Operations Management

Background

Common problems encountered in the industry are solved using the logical approach and applying a combination of different available operations management techniques.

During the course of study, LOM students are exposed to various techniques in the respective subjects (quantitative and qualitative). Problems and projects that they encounter may only be related to specific areas of that particular subject.

To prepare the students for the industry, there is a need to expose them to analyze and solve "real-life" problems requiring the application of all the subjects.

Synopsis

The LOM Final Year Project is a subject that is covered in semester 2 of the final year. Students will be grouped in teams and are required to undertake and complete a pre-assigned project.

This project is either an in-house problem or study (identified by the LOM Lecturers) or a study for a particular organization in the industry. It will however cover one or more of the following areas in the scope of logistics and operations management:

  • Purchasing / Supplier Management
  • Materials Planning and Control
  • Materials Storage and Warehousing
  • Transportation
  • Operations (manufacturing / service)
  • Distribution Centre Management
  • Performance Evaluation and Improvement
  • Documentation of Procedures
  • Quality Management (Non-technical)
  • Information Technology in Logistics

The students are given the opportunity to relate & combine all the techniques that they have learnt in the classroom with real work situations & problems that they will ultimately face in the industry.

At the end of the project, each team is required to produce a formal report on their analysis, findings and recommendations of the project. They are also required make formal presentations to the supervisors
