Ever wondered what are the stocks available in your store or warehouse? How about when a customer has made an urgent request for a product and you are not able to provide the information as your storemen or sales personnel has forgotten to do an inventory check? Ever wondered how can you remove all paper form of inventory control and yet able to keep accurate information of your inventory? The answer for all these is to implement an inventory management system with mobile capabilities and enhanced performance.

Most companies will have inventory, be it a small provision shop, to large retail outlets like Ikea. Traditional means of managing inventory are usually not fool-proof and prone to mistakes as the inventory is normally managed by people and coupled with the fact that the bigger the company, the more people managing the same set of inventory, the more it make errors almost impossible to avoid. The prototype we are developing hopefully will provide a solution to most organizations at an affordable price.

Today UPS, or United Parcel Service Inc., is a global company with one of the most recognized and admired brands in the world. UPS has become the world's largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services.

UPS current learning system is physically driven which can be time consuming and resource draining. Currently, UPS is still using the conventional method of attending courses organized by the human resource management and having the trainers to travel all around the Asia-Pacific Region. Hence, through the implementation of E-Learning Management System, it helps in assisting UPS to plan courses in a less costly and more efficient way.

Our group is undertaking a company based project, secured through one of our members, from the SIP company, Display Concepts - Advertising and Promotions Pte Ltd.

The company deals in a variety of products such as foodstuffs, household products, etc (the list is indefinite due to its nature of business as an advertising and promotion company). There is a need to maintain a proper database for keeping track of the information for each and every product/brand that it promotes. The FYP group will develop a Sampling Portal and a database to maintain its clients'/consumers' information. Its current databases are kept in Microsoft Excel format, which does not have proper query and form functions to facilitate data entry & retrieval, as well as the generation of useful reports, thus making the database difficult and tedious to maintain. The information captured through its portal would be vital for facilitating market research to widen marketing opportunities, evaluating its market performance and would also benefit the company's clients.

The web site is designed mainly for consumers to request for free samples online through Display Concepts & Promos. Consumers need only to furnish some personal particulars and answer to some simple questions about their shopping habits to receive free samples of products from the company. This information is captured and stored into the database.

This system will mainly be accessible by the sales department, admin department and the company's management.

The Human Resource (HR) department of Manx Financial Services operates their daily activities manually, involving paper-intensive processes that are time-consuming. At present, the department’s potential is not being fully maximised, which causes its efficiency and effectiveness to be relatively low. To help streamline the department’s business activities and increase its performance level, we propose to implement a HR Management System (HRMS) using primarily Cold fusion. This HRMS will benefit the department in many ways, which will be elaborated in the later sections of this proposal, in the long run.

Our Final Year Project (FYP) titled "IM-Portal", for Internship Matching Portal, aims to automate the whole process of sourcing for internship placements and allocating students to these placements for internship. Our first target user is Temasek Polytechnic's Diploma in Business Information Technology (BIT), but if found suitable, it is hoped that this system could be adopted by other diplomas in Temasek Polytechnic.

Currently, BIT lecturers have to first source for placements from interested companies. This requires companies to fill up a form indicating the number of interns required, the job scope, special skills required and many other details. The Student Internship Programme (SIP) Committee then allocates students for each of these placements manually. Students are usually allocated based on their credits in subjects related to the special skills required by the company. Companies could of course request for interviews to select their own interns. The whole process is tedious and subjective, and it is not uncommon to have students posted to jobs that they have little interest.

Our project aims to solve these problems and to automate the tedious process as much as possible. It is envisioned that companies interested to participate in the internship programme would be able to sign up and submit their requirements online. The SIP Committee would then screen through these placements and once they are found appropriate, students would be able to view all the placements available and indicate their interest. Students would also be able to post their resume online for companies to view and for the system to match them to available placements. Companies could select interns based on the resumes posted or allow the system to find a good match for them. Matching would be based on interest and job scope, academic results, special skills and nearest staying location.

Our group is setting up a web community whereby business providers can meet buyers. Businesses offering their services or products can join our community to expand their customer base with the prospect of more customers. It is a win-win situation. A company can join us as both a provider and buyer would be able to expand their business and outsource their jobs when required.

Buyers joining the community would have to pay a registration fee before using our system. With an account, they are able to search for providers through a search engine. If the buyers are not able to find exactly what they need, we provide a forum for them to post what they need and this would be made available to the providers. The providers then reply to the buyers if they are able to meet the requirements.

Local fashion is gradually gaining recognition in Singapore, thus giving us the idea of constructing a website for this line of business. In sync with the government's efforts to promote Singapore as a "City of the Arts", we realized that this little island has produced some fairly capable and successful designers who are gradually gaining recognition for their works. To further showcase local talents, it would be essential to start up a website which allows users to view items by a particular designer, subsequently linking it up to the other websites by local designers.

Our project targets this very great need in the nation where natural resources are scarce, and information is essential. A survey by market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) shows a big leap in the number of Internet users from 13.5% in year 2002 to 50% in year 2003. Of this, 24.6% indicated that they will buy online. These statistics presents a huge potential for e-commerce on the Internet. From our research, we found that there is much room for the property buying and selling processes to leverage on the Internet and e-commerce to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Hence, we come up with the business idea of setting up an online property system to facilitate the process. The typical property buying and selling processes involve sourcing or advertising followed by viewing of properties, price negotiation and closing. When sourcing for properties, prospective buyers usually engage agents to bring them to view different properties all over Singapore. The entire process is usually time-consuming and unfruitful. Many whom we surveyed also indicated that they are not satisfied with the service provided by agents. Price negotiation is the most time-consuming activity within the buying and selling process and can take from 2 weeks to 6 months.

* Survey findings are based on the article "Portals need more offline presence: IDC S'pore" published on Business Times, 11 Jul 2003

Singapore has been the Regional Headquarters of Robert Bosch for Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Indonesia since 1958. Its product scope extends from automotive equipment, Power Tools, Mobile Communications, Automation Technology to Packaging Machines.

Bosch, in the long term, is looking for further growth in the region by setting standards in innovative product technology, offering a wide product range and meeting consumer demands. They have embarked on a journey towards service excellence through developing a culture that is focused on service quality to increase customer satisfaction. This initiative will play an important role in Bosch's worldwide strategies.

In order to sustain its competitive position, Bosch needs to fully leverage on its human capital. This requires integrating employee processes and information with business processes and strategies to achieve optimal business results. There emerges a need for a Human Resource System that can provide HR managers with decision-orientated information and support critical human resource processes like recruitment, payroll management and employee management.

Have you ever experienced telemarketers calling you at your mobile phone or at home, and asking for your personal data information such as age, interests, and shopping preferences? Have you experienced your mailboxes being filled with unsolicited catalogs and junk mails? Have you experienced marketers approaching you for filling up survey question forms without any tangible returns? Are you aware that you have the right to sell them your personal information or survey data at a certain price? Marketers demand more and more of your personal information. The rise of the Internet, with its ability to help companies obtain information easily about customers, is causing many privacy issues for many of us as consumers. As we've seen, the primary use of customer information by companies today seems to generate growing volumes of junk mails and unsolicited telemarketing calls. It seems that the easiest way for companies to generate value from the customer information they've captured is to sell it to third party list companies. The list companies in turn resell the information to a variety of companies that use it to target their direct mail and telemarketing offers. Do you recognize that marketers are selling your "privacy" cheaply to companies that are using it for their own interests? These are common problems faced by many consumers in Singapore.

Being modular, the system allows us to customize the system to the company’s needs at the time, as well as adding on, upgrading or removing modules as these needs change over time. Revenue will be generated from licensing of this system.

PACC Container Line is a shipping company which deals with container feeder, freight forwarding and parcel liner services. One of PACC's generic activity is to make purchases from suppliers for various products, provisions and services. PACC's current purchasing system is not computerized and relies heavily on paper-work. The project we are embarking on would be integrating a computerized purchasing module into its other existing accouting system modules.
