Comments from Past Students on SIP

Chia Shiut Erh, Ariane
Diploma in Accounting and Finance

"With the help of the internship programme, I had a chance to experience real working life and how I can meet peoples’ expectations. It is also a great way to brush up on my interaction skills and apply what I learnt in school, take for instance, computer knowledge, accounting concepts, human resource skills, business communication skills and so on. The programme has also made me realise how different working life is from student life. More responsibility is expected when working. In short the Student Internship Programme has been a worthwhile learning opportunity and I have benefited greatly from it .

I think the timing of the Student Internship Programme is just perfect for students attached to audit firms as this happens to be the peak period of the audit firms and thus there are lots to learn and benefit from."

Diploma in Business

"During the SIP, I was attached to the Personnel Dept. of a bank. My main duty was to record and file leave applications. In addition to this, I also prepared walk-in applicants for interviews, gave typing tests and did some data entry. These assigned tasks as well as my interaction with colleagues have given me ample opportunities to learn a great deal about the functions of a typical Human Resource Dept.

I got to experience the actual working environment. I’m able to understand better the lessons taught in the classroom after SIP since I’ve gone through the hands-on aspect of the subject.

I’ve also changed my attitude towards being a student. I begin to appreciate my life as a student better because a student gets to learn new things everyday, thus making life more interesting and enriching. On the other hand, a working person does more or less similar tasks day to day.

Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that good qualifications really isn’t all that is required to establish a successful career. Work experience, good human relations and interpersonal skills are also important and they determine how fast and high one can move up the career ladder."

Diploma in Business

"One of my colleagues has this customer named Christina from A.B.C. She wanted to place an order for hampers with my colleague, but I helped her instead. Ever since the day she ordered hampers with me, she had been calling me very often. She would ask me a lot of questions – whether the food products in the hampers are fresh, whether our packaging is nicely wrapped up, whether we would deliver the hampers on time etc. She would also go through the names and addresses of the people she sent hampers to again and again. She even asked me to fax over all the Chinese New Year cards that we typed for her to double-check the spellings.

At the beginning, I was not happy about it but I always remembered the greatest myth – The customers are always right. I continued to serve her well. There was this day when she called me up to choose a floral arrangement for her. At the end of the conversation, she told me that I had been a great help to her and I provided her with good service. She still continued to call me up and we hit it off quite well. On the last day of my attachment, I gave her a call to tell her I was leaving and I told her to continue to support the company and she said "No problem."

Diploma in Tourism Management

"During my attachment, I experienced a service encounter that can be related to the company’s service culture. The incident happened the day before New Year’s eve when I was performing morning shift duty. When I was about to leave, a customer approached me to make enquiries about the cruise packages. I made an effort to stay back and serve him even though I was officially off-duty. He was intending to go for the 4 days cruise to Port Klang and Langkawi so details of the package were explained thoroughly to him. I showed patience and sincerity towards serving him even though he held many doubts about the package. As one of his tour companions was a Singaporean holding an Australian passport, there were doubts regarding the immigration requirements. However, I took the initiative and sought help from the cruise manager and managed to clear his doubts. Though he did not purchase the package on the day itself, he appreciated the enormous help I offered and I expressed to him that it was a pleasure to serve him."

Diploma in Legal Studies

Besides the many lessons in life, I sharpened my drafting skills and communication with different kinds of people. I have learnt many new things which will come in useful when I actually go out to work. Besides this, I am able to do research more easily as I had a pretty good time doing it during my attachment. I am now able to identify the numerous sources where I can get the information I require. I understand that research is an important aspect of being a legal executive. I also have a better understanding of the various procedures as well as the kinds of proceedings that go on in court almost everyday.

Janet Gay
Diploma in Legal Studies

I had a very enriching training and working experience. I am glad that I was given the opportunity to be attached to many departments of the firm and had a wide range of exposure. My visit to the Registry of Trademarks and Patents, perusing Bankruptcy files and drafting a Bill of Costs will help me have a better understanding of the subjects taught later in the diploma programme.

Mary Gayle Abelanes
Diploma in Business Information Technology

You get to learn beyond the classroom walls. You’ll learn lessons in life that no book or teacher can ever give. Not only did it help me appreciate and understand the world ahead of me after I graduate, it has definitely molded me into a better person too.
