Subject Synopses

B115022 Language and Communication 1
Emphasises foundation/study skills and academic writing. Aims at providing participants with the necessary language and listening skills to facilitate academic learning.

B115023 Introduction to Law and Criminal Law
Introduces the participants to the concept of law, to the background and legal system under which the laws in Singapore operate. Also deals with the Criminal Law of Singapore, covering the main offences and defences in the Penal Code (Cap 224)

B115279 Basic Principles of Physical and Electronic Security
Gives an insight into the basic security systems and designs and will cover assessment of various materials and products used in controlling access and building security.

B115025 Language and Communication 2
Gives participants an overview of interpersonal skills. Covers key fundamentals of interpersonal communication, assertive skills and negotiation skills. Also covers written communication and participants learn to write short reports relevant to their line of work.

B115027 Computer Fundamentals
Foundational subject in computing. Participants learn fundamental concepts of the computer, its hardware and software components and their functions. Participants are taught essential WINDOWS commands. They will also be trained to use a word processing package to produce business reports and documents promptly and in a highly-presentable format.

B115342 Security Planning and Design
Covers the various aspects of the security planning cycle from risk management and crime prevention to information planning.

B115028 Language and Communication 3
Equips participants with the skills necessary for work. Gives an overview of the various kinds of business correspondence in the working world. Participants will also learn how to write cover letters and memoranda. Also focuses on the conduct and management of meetings and teaches the art of oral presentation.

B115334 Basic Principles of Fire Safety Management
Introduces the participants to the Fire Safety Regulations, the role of fire safety manager and the types of premises that require protection.

B115335 Risk Management
Covers the risk management function, aspects of risk identification, analysis and prioritization, risk management planning, risk reduction and risk monitoring.

Diploma (Year 1)

B115343 Civil Law
Provides participants with knowledge of the main principles of civil law including the laws of negligence, marriage, divorce and commerce.

B115024 Principles of Management
Provides an understanding of the key functions of management and the practical issues confronting managers today. Topics include planning, organising, leading, controlling, international management and ethics and social responsibility.

B115032 Public Relations
Provides an understanding of public relations management. Covers PR tools and techniques, such as writing of press releases and types of PR publications, organising PR events, news media and media relations, corporate communication, crisis management, ethics in PR and programmes which enhance the understanding and relations between an organisation and its public.

B115026 Productivity and Service Quality
Equips participants with the knowledge, skills and mindset of productivity and service quality. This practice-oriented programme emphasises workshops and a hands-on approach through experiential learning.

B115346 Principles of Investigation and Report Writing
Deals with principles, methods and investigative techniques to locate, document and disseminate information relating to surveillance and incidents such as losses and the commission of offences. Participants will also be taught the basic investigation report preparation for court and official use.

B115348 Fire Safety Management
A more in depth study from the basic principles taught earlier. Participants will be exposed to procedures adopted in running a fire command center, the use of detection, protection and control systems, and fire investigations. This subject will be the equivalent of the Fire Safety Manager module conducted by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

B115349 Security Management Theory
Covers various aspects of security management including the responsibilities of a security manager, the security organisation and security management systems.

B115350 Principles of Accounting and Finance
Provides participants with an understanding of the basic accounting principles and the general framework of accounting process. Participants will also be taught financial planning processes and will be able to explain profit planning using pro-forma statement fundamentals.

B115033 Organisational Behaviour
Provides participants with an understanding of the key determinants of human behaviour, at both the individual and group levels, in an organisation. It aims to develop the ability to use organisational behaviour concepts to improve personal, interpersonal and group interaction skills. Some of the topics are perception, motivation, reinforcement theory, group dynamics and conflict management.

B115352 Fire Safety Project
Integrates the study of concepts, principles, management and technology which are covered in subjects of the course with current issues confronting fire safety and management.

Diploma (Year 2)

B115050 Physical Security
Examines aspects of physical barriers in security protection. It will cover an assessment of various materials and products used in controlling access, protection in external and internal areas and a review of building security, guard force issues and personnel security.

B115355 Information and Computer Security
Discusses threats to information and computers and strategies such as information controls, cryptology and communications and systems security.

B115040 Work Analysis, Measurement and Improvement
Deals with techniques to optimize human resources and increase production capability and/or reduce the cost of operations. Covers techniques to determine time estimates for performance of a specific task.

B115353 Legal Issues facing Security Practitioners
Participants will be given an overview of the law surrounding the handling of building and facility security, including trespass, detention of persons and safety of the public.

B115357 Electronic Security
Includes the study of intruder detection and alarm systems, access controls, closed circuit television systems and system design, selection and installation.

B115362 Industrial Security Procedures
Areas examined will be Hotel Security, Retail Security, Health Care Security and Warehouse Security.

B115356 Security Operations - Staff Work and Co-ordination
Covers the study of the roles of a security director, individual employees, the hiring and training of security personnel and running a guard force.

B115034 Criminal Procedure and Law of Evidence
Criminal Procedure introduces the relevant provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code and the cases interpreting the provisions. Participants will be acquainted with the documents and proceedings leading to a criminal trial and the conduct of such trials. The criminal justice system and the range of penalties will also be covered. The Law of Evidence provides an examination of the Evidence Act. Topics covered include the admissibility of evidence, the burden and the standard of proof and the concepts relating to the competency, comparability and corroboration of witnesses.

B115361 Facility Security Management
Includes security policy and procedure, high rise building security, personnel movement control and disaster planning.

B115359 and B115363 Security Projects 1 and 2
To be done on a group basis (4 participants), these will require participants to undertake security planning, audit and survey based on site visits.
