Subject Synopses
Legal Communications 1
Provides participants with competencies in effective oral and written communications skills within the legal context. Participants learn how to be effective listeners and note-takers, read case reports and statutory provisions as well as make oral presentations.
Legal Systems & Methods
Introduces participants to the concept of law and the legal system in Singapore. Participants will learn the respective roles and structure of the executive, legislature and the judiciary. Participants are also trained in case reading, legal research and statutory interpretation.
Criminal Law
Covers the law relating to criminal offences and defences. The focus is on identifying and understanding the elements of major offences and defences in the Penal Code with references to decided cases. Criminal offences in other key legislation such as the Misuse of Drugs Act are also dealt with.
Law of Contract
Provides participants with an overview of the legal principles governing the formation of contract, the rights and obligations created by certain type of clauses and the consequent remedies available to anyone who suffers a breach of contract. It will also introduce the Sale of Goods Act and the concepts of “property” and the passing of risk.
Legal Communications 2
Builds on Legal Communications 1. Participants will continue to hone their written communications skills by learning how to write reports, letters and opinions. They are also trained to conduct simple client interviews and semi-formal meetings including the drafting of the agenda and minutes of meetings.
Principles of Management
Provides an overview of the key functions of management and the practical issues which the supervisors/ managers face. Aspects of management such as planning, organizing, leading, controlling, business ethics and social responsibility are covered.
Law of Torts
Covers the main areas of civil actions available to parties seeking civil redress. This includes the law relating to negligence, nuisance, defamation, assault and battery.
Managing People
Equips participants with the necessary people management skills that will enable them to build constructive relationships and optimize staff performance.
Computer Systems & Applications
Covers the fundamentals concepts in the main hardware components of a computer system. It provides an understanding of how these components are set up and how they function together. Current IT trends, mainly in the areas of internet applications are discussed within the core framework of data communications, networks and security issues. The basic theory is supplemented with hands-on exposure with office productivity software.
Diploma
Family Law
Introduces the law relating to marriage, divorce, the maintenance of wife and children, the protection of the family, division of matrimonial assets and the parent-child relationship. Close attention is paid to the Women's Charter and relevant cases.
Law of Real Property
Introduces the law of real property in Singapore. Topics include ownership of land, covenants affecting the land, law in relation to mortgages, landlords and tenants, strata titles and management corporations.
Criminal Procedure
Deals with the procedure in respect of criminal matters, from arrest to criminal litigation and appeal. It covers the entire process of administering criminal justice and criminal litigation as provided by the Criminal Procedure Code and portions of the Evidence Act and trains participants to assist a criminal lawyer effectively.
Managing Business Systems
This subject focuses on skill-based applications with hands-on exposure to database management and profiling which are widely used in the business world. The subject which draws upon the foundation the students have in computing also covers major information systems management, their strategic use and implications in the corporate world.
Conveyancing Practice
Deals with the procedural aspects connected with property transactions. Participants will be taught the procedures involved in the preparation of instruments for lodgement for such transactions.
Intellectual Property
Includes the substantive law relating to confidential information, trademarks, patents and copyright. Participants will learn trademark and patent registration procedure through a ‘hands-on' project. The remedies available in the event of infringement are also covered. Participants are given an introduction to the protection of information technology with particular reference to the Computer Misuse Act.
Principles of Civil Litigation 1
Introduces participants to the litigation process from the commencement of a writ action to enforcement of judgment. It also covers the substantive legal principles underlying civil procedures and includes hands-on training in the drafting of court documents.
Business Accounting
Provides participants with an understanding of the basic accounting concepts and application to the commercial industry. It also covers the financial accounting process, the interpretation of financial statement, the accrual concept of accounting, planning and budgeting and the analysis of financial statement.
Insurance Law
Provides participants with an understanding of the law that governs the insurance business in Singapore as well as the concepts and legal aspects of insurance and its application to the main classes of insurance. Topics include risk management, insurance operation, insurance legislation and documentation, principles of insurance such as the duty of utmost good faith and insurable interest. It also covers the operational aspects of insurance and reinsurance.
Company Law
Provides a basic understanding of the law that governs and regulates companies. Topics include types of corporate entities, Memorandum and Articles of Association, director's duties, rights of members, takeovers, reconstruction and mergers and corporate finance.
Principles of Civil Litigation 2
Focuses on the civil litigation process from the post judgment state. It also covers accident litigations and matrimonial proceedings.
Arbitration and ADR
Covers the various forms of dispute settlement process with particular emphasis on mediation and arbitration. In arbitration, emphasis will be placed on the key concepts and the law and rules governing the arbitration process such as the important provisions of the Arbitration Act, the International Arbitration Act, the UNCITRAL Model law and the SIAC Arbitration Rules. Drafting of the documents required for use in the arbitration process will be taught. For mediation, emphasis will be placed on concepts, techniques, process and the conduct of mediation.
Law of Insolvency
Introduces the law and practice of insolvency particularly relating to the bankruptcy of an individual and the winding up and judicial management of companies.
Shipping Law
Introduces the general principles of shipping law and practice in Singapore with emphasis on the procedure in the arrest and sale of vessels and the salient aspects of ship registration. The law governing the carriage of goods by sea is also covered.
Trusts Wills and Probate
This subject is a study of the law relating to trusts, wills, probate and administration. Particular attention is paid to the drafting of wills and the procedures for obtaining grant of Letters of Administration and Probate.
Company Secretarial Practice
Aims to equip participants with an understanding of corporate secretarial functions. Participants will learn the law which governs and regulates companies in Singapore with particular emphasis on the practical and the procedural aspects. Topics include duties and responsibilities of a Company Secretary, roles and powers of the Registrar, company formation procedures, Memorandum and Articles of Association, the requirements for prospectus, meetings and resolutions, registers and statutory records and the Singapore Exchange.
Law of Banking
Introduces all aspects of the banker-customer relationship, the rights and obligations owed by each party to the other. It also covers the law relating to negotiable instruments and examines the legal framework of various financing transactions.
Management of Law Office and Court Technology
Covers principles in managing a law office including the office environment, human resources, work flow, office automation, records and document management, logistical support, electronic filing and litigation support systems
