Together with 2 lecturers, 31 students from the Diploma in Logistics & Operations Management embarked on a 6D5N study trip to China, from 17 – 22 June 2007.
Students visited the world-class manufacturing plant of General Motors (Shanghai), where the car assembly is carried out. Many were fascinated by the high level of coordination required within the plant to complete the assembling of a car.
Youcan Foods, a Singapore listed company, was their next stop in the itinerary. In addition to witnessing the manufacturing of a variety of ice-creams, the students were treated to a sumptuous lunch, of food and desserts manufactured by their very own plant.
The trip further brought the students to the manufacturing plants of Motorola (Hangzhou) and Spansion (Suzhou). Over at Motorola, students walked through the manufacturing process of the mobile phone. Many were left in awe of how the assembling operations work, with precision and speed.
The trip has been an eye-opening experience for students and lecturers alike. What they have witnessed are operations that have since moved out of Singapore, but remained as an integral part of the logistics functions.
Quoted one senior LOM student “I’m glad I’ve came for the trip. Not only have I gained logistical knowledge that couldn’t be found in textbooks, I have made friends whose friendships that I will treasure for many years to come!’
For the lecturers, it was a challenging yet fulfilling working trip. “We had an enjoyable time bringing the students on the trip. Our students are mature and carry themselves well throughout the trip. We have learnt new knowledge and definitely, bringing the camaraderie among staff and students to a higher level!”
