Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management

Described by students as being humorous, encouraging and always going the extra mile to ensure students enjoy learning, Hoi San has been with TP since 1995.

Graduated from University of Toronto, Canada, Hoi San came back to Singapore to fulfil her dreams of working in hotels. She spent 10 years in the lodging sector in both Singapore and Canada where her last held position was Director of Sales.

Passionate about teaching and engaging young minds, Hoi San bid farewell to the hospitality industry and embrace her other dream of teaching. A meticulous person, she likes to challenge students to think out of the box. With her patience and kind demeanour, students often find it easy to open up to her with their problems and enquiries. “Seeing my students transforming from naïve, to worldly-wise individuals who contribute to society is my greatest achievement, says Hoi San.

Ms Ivy Tan Poh Luan Ivy Tan Poh Luan

“Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one” ~ Malcolm Forbes. With that in mind, Ivy joined TP in 2002 and has been engaging the students’ minds with her knowledge and experience.

Ivy has been in the travel industry for the last 10 years with experience ranging from wholesaling of tour products, planning incentive tours, sales & marketing to ticketing. She also had the opportunity to work in Shanghai, China in the hospitality industry for about 3 years.

Coupled with her Bachelor of Arts from National University of Singapore and her experiences, Ivy often ignites enthusiasm in her classes for whatever subject she taught. An avid shopper and traveller, she keeps herself relevant to her teaching career through her quest for continuous education.

Mr Prasetya Purnawan Prasetya Purnawan

Pras obtained his Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) degree from Petra Christian University, Surabaya and two German-style vocational training diplomas (Industriekaufmann and Luftverkehrsassistent) from Yayasan Bina Eksekutif, Jakarta and Lufthansa German Airlines, Cologne.

After graduating from the university, Pras, as the first Lufthansa's management trainee in Indonesia, had to regularly commute between Indonesia and Germany, and performed on-the-job-trainings in different cities in Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and naturally, in Germany itself. He ultimately chose sales and marketing as his career focus, and subsequently worked in Lufthansa's offices in Jakarta , Denpasar (Bali), and Surabaya.

Pras has made Singapore as his home base since 1995 and by now he has accumulated more than 14 years of sales and marketing, operations, as well as general management experience in the hospitality and tourism industry. He has worked as Branch Representative of Lufthansa German Airlines, Surabaya ; Senior Sales Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya (pre-opening team); Director of Sales of Le Meridien Singapore, and his last held post was General Manager of YMCA International House, Singapore, a 111-room limited service hotel on Orchard Road.

Ms Quah Siok Sim Quah Siok Sim
Section Head


With her slim and tall persona, Siok Sim is clearly a sports woman. Used to play netball competitively, she now does her weekly kickboxing routine besides running around with her two adorable toddlers and doing retail therapy (i.e. shopping) on weekends.

A member of the Association of Singapore Housekeepers, Siok (as she is called within the division) has been teaching in TP since 1997. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management from University of Surrey in UK.

Specialising in rooms division, her enthusiasm and gregarious nature often rubs off on the students, making the lessons enlightening and educational.

Ms Evelyn Lim Evelyn Lim

With a Masters in Hospitality & Tourism Management from Nanyang Technological University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from National University of Singapore, Evelyn comes with a wealth of experience.

Evelyn has been involved in organising major events, meetings and exhibitions as well as trade / business missions overseas. In addition, her experience includes management & systems audit, public relations and human resource management.

Having been with TP since its inception in 1990 at the then-Grange Road campus, Evelyn has been involved in the growth and evolution of polytechnic education, particularly in the area of hospitality and tourism. In addition to her academic portfolio in TP, Evelyn has also been involved in designing, co-ordinating, and facilitating hospitality and tourism management training programmes for third world countries under the auspices of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.

Ms Lisa Chua 

Lisa Chua
Senior Lecturer

Lisa graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing.  She has more than ten years’ experience working in the tourism industry, specializing in tourism planning and human resources.  

Before marking Temasek Polytechnic as a chapter in her life, Lisa was with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).  She had the opportunity to be exposed to various work in Corporate Planning, Human Resources, Education Services and Manpower Development.  Her last portfolio in STB was to work with training providers and industry partners to enhance the capabilities of the tourism manpower in Singapore, by reviewing and recommending courses and seminars to close the gaps in the training landscape.  Work in the Education Services Division entailed partnering education service providers and travelling around the Asian region to market and promote Singapore as an Education Hub.  Lisa was also involved in two transformation efforts in the STB while in the Human Resources Department, co-facilitating the visioning exercise and getting involved in experiential learning.

Lisa has conducted workshops for tourism officials in STB, as well as overseas in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.  She has lived in Vietnam where she taught the undergraduates at the Hanoi University subjects such as Tourism Planning and Destination Marketing.  

Lisa also holds a Master of Science degree in Tourism Planning with the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, a Diploma in Human Resource Development, and a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) where learner-centred methodologies were taught.

Lisa enjoys a good book and good food.  And travelling, of course.

Revi Revi Nair
Senior Lecturer

Revi has been working in the Hospitality industry since 1984 and has held various positions including duty manager, front office manager, director of rooms and director of operations. His work stint includes the Hyatt Regency in Houston, Chicago, London and Singapore. His job also took him to Toronto where, in a span of fourteen years, he worked for the Intercontinental, Four Seasons and the Marriott chain of hotels. Through his vast work experience Revi has become a pre-opening specialist and departmental trainer.

A graduate of the University of Houston, Revi is a member of the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association of America, Greater Toronto Area Rooms Division Association and the International Rooms Division Executives Association.

Revi looks intimidating but is actually a favourite amongst the students for his caring nature and humorous disposition. During his spare time, Revi not only swims, bowls and plays squash but also coaches a little league soccer team of 9-year olds. His personal motto is “Life is short, don’t make it shorter!”

Susan 

Susan Goh
Senior Lecturer


Susan’s seemingly serious demeanour belies the fun, humourous andcaring personality in her.She has been with Temasek Polytechnic, first as a lecturer then as a Course Manager. After a two and a half years  sabbatical in Australia, she has re-joined the Polytechnic as a Senior Lecturer.

A graduate of the National University of Singapore, Institute of Education as well as the Marketing Institute of Singapore, Susan’s first passion has always been facilitating enquiry and learning in youths and young adults. Her experiences include  teaching of English and English literature in a secondary school as well as  events management and marketing in the private sector. The fulfillment from teaching made her decide to return to  where her first passion lies.

Susan sees her role as a teacher very much in the same vein as Charles H. Spurgeon who believe that “a good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.”

As such, Susan hopes to be able to carve her name on the hearts that she encounters as she imparts her experiences both in academic learning and approaches to life.

Ms Zhang Wei Zhang Wei
Senior Lecturer


Hailing from China, Zhang Wei got her first degree from Nan Kai University in China specialising in Tourism Management. After working in travel agencies, hotels and tourism training and consultancy institutions, she did her postgraduate study and achieved Master of Business in Nanyang Technology University in Singapore.

Specialised in travel and tour operations and management as well as tourism planning, Zhang Wei has been very active in tourism research and consultancy. She has since published papers and articles in the subject matter. Being a lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic allows her to share her experiences with the students and this is what she had been dreaming of.

Mr Andrew Wong 

Andrew Wong
Lecturer

Andrew graduated from the National University of Singapore, majoring in Political Science.

He joined Singapore Airlines (SIA) as a Management Trainee in 1985, and after a year’s training, was posted to various departments at SIA Head Office, including stints in Cabin Crew and Marketing.

Andrew was posted out of Singapore in 1991 as a Regional Marketing Executive for SIA and was based in Hong Kong. He then held several State Manager and General Manager positions in Surabaya in Indonesia, Manchester in England, New Delhi in India and the Maldives.

The seventeen years spent living and working overseas have been an intensely enlightening and growing experience for him, and he hopes to share these with his students.

During his spare time, Andrew likes running and checking out new eating spots (making running even more important) , as well as reading, listening to music and watching movies.

His personal philosophy revolves around the 4Fs of Fitness (physical and mental), Family, Friends and Faith. He believes that Life is too short and too enjoyable to mope and worry about the small things, particularly those beyond our control, so focus on the 4Fs and be Happy and Healthy.

Ms Angeline Chin 

Angeline Chin
Lecturer

Angeline has been working in the hospitality industry since 1991.   Her decade long career in the business includes working with leading organisations such as The Shangri-La Singapore, The Mandarin Oriental Singapore, and YTL Hotels & Properties Sdn Bhd, holding various appointments in the sales and marketing divisions of these establishments.

Angeline graduated Best Overall Degree Student of her cohort from IMI University Centre in Luzern, Switzerland and earned a First Class Honours degree in Hotel and Tourism from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.  She also holds a Higher Diploma in Hotel Management from Shatec Institutes, a Certificate in Food & Beverage Management from Ecole Hoteliere Lausanne, Switzerland and an Advance Diploma in Business Administration from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

This mother of one has an eclectic range of interests that spans from horse riding, performance driving in Malaysia to cooking.  She is in constant pursuit of becoming the ultimate domestic diva and enjoys putting her industry skills and hospitality experience to good use even at home.

Miss Claudereine Tan 

Clauderlene Tan

Claude taught international students for 5 years at TP’s satellite campus - The Tourism Academy @ Sentosa (TAS). The diversity of the student-mix and learning needs provided opportunities to hone her teaching skills and explore effective approaches. The subjects she taught covered tourism, marketing, resort, spa, and attractions management.

Prior to teaching, Claude spent 11 years as part of the pioneer team for the Singapore Philatelic Museum, National Heritage Board. As a curator for a small museum, she wore different hats involving collection and exhibition research, exhibition development, programme development and consultancy for gallery development..

One of her achievements was the setting up the museum’s inaugural travelling exhibition at schools and community libraries. She also helped to  develop  the first exhibition for young children and spearheaded the redevelopment of the museum’s permanent galleries in 2005. Claude was invited by The National Art Gallery of Singapore to contribute ideas for the largest gallery in Southeast Asia slated to open in 2014 and continues to volunteer with the museums.

Claude has a BA in Communication Studies (Murdoch University), a post-graduate Diploma in Museum Studies (Leicester University) and is currently pursuing a MA of Education (University of Sheffield).

Mr Chew Kian Beng 

Chew Kian Beng
Lecturer

Kian Beng graduated from National University of Singapore with B.Sc. (Merit) in Computer Science and Information Systems, and he worked in his field of studies for 10 years as technology consultant and project manager.

Fueled by passion in the tourism industry, he jumped at a chance to become an Accounts Director in an events company. This saw him working with various hotels in Asian region, travel agencies, team building organisations and entertainment companies. He had done many successful corporate events, including Retreats, Family Day, Team Building and Galas locally and overseas.

Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic Business School, Kian Beng had taught in IIT School for 4 years as an adjunct lecturer. He was well-liked by students for being approachable and making lessons relevant to their experience. He finds the famous quote crucial in making lessons alive:

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." - Confucius

Ms Chew Li

Chew Li graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with Honours in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing.

Chew Li has more than 10 years’ of experience in the hospitality and travel industry. Before pursuing her degree at NUS, she was working in the travel industry. Her experience ranges from sales and marketing of outbound travel packages, tour operations to organizing and executing incentive and conventional tours.


Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, her last appointment was a Regional Marketing Manager with a subsidiary of Wyndham Worldwide in the hospitality industry. There, she was primarily responsible for database marketing: leading the member marketing team (in Singapore and China office) to develop and execute member marketing strategies and campaigns for the specific purpose of new member on boarding education, activation and retention from a culturally diverse member base in Asia.  


She has also been actively involved in organizing and executing events of various capacities ranging from large-scale (more than 1,000 attendees at the event) B2C member roadshows in Manila, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur to smaller scale customized B2B networking workshop in Kunming, Bangkok and Singapore.

Mr Gevin Png 

Gevin Png
Lecturer

Gevin has been closely associated with the tourism industry after his graduation from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours). His experience includes running an F&B outlet with friends and a six-year tenure with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

At STB, Gevin was exposed to four important facets of tourism, namely Product Development, Events Management, BTMICE and Destination Marketing. Gevin was part of the Thematic Development Division (which later became the Sightseeing and Cruise Division). He was the officer in-charge of the Merlion relocation and opening of the New Merlion Park at Fullerton and the Open Air Interpretative Centre (Singapore River). He was also a member of the Singapore River Schematic Design team.

Gevin had spent about three and a half years leading the STB Frankfurt team that was tasked to market and promote Singapore in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe. After his successful stint in Europe, Gevin led a business developement team in the BTMICE division.

Gevin enjoys interacting with people, loves music, traveling, reading biographies and history books, and is an avid sports fan.

Ms Grace Chia

A graduate from the pioneer batch of Diploma in Tourism Management at TP, Grace was also the gold medallist for outstanding student of the year.

Before furthering her education in Nanyang Technological University where she graduated with Honours, she was working in the travel industry. Her experience ranges from planning and organising incentive and educational tours, sales & marketing to tour operations.

After graduating from the university, she joined the hospitality and food & beverage industry. She has since spearheaded large events such as the annual World Gourmet Summit in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board. This award-winning event saw her collaborating with international chefs and winemakers, sourcing for sponsorships and conceptualizing marketing strategies and workflow plans to ensure the smooth running of the national event.

Passionate about serving the community, Grace and her friend had recently set up Project Happy Feet – an organisation that improves the lives of under-privileged children and youths in developing countries by supporting programmes and initiatives that empower children and youths through training and education.

Grace also has a Masters in Business Administration with the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. .

Ms Jeyasingam Shanthi 

Jeyasingam Shanthi
Lecturer

Shanthi graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science degree. She then worked at the Dynasty Hotel before leaving Singapore to study at The Hague Hotel School in Holland, earning her Diploma in Hospitality Management.

From there she moved to London, England where she stayed for several years, working with Forte Hotels. On her return to Singapore, she joined the Goodwood group and then the pre-opening team for the Four Seasons Singapore. Her background is in Rooms Division.

Shanthi then moved to the USA with her husband and joined the workforce there. Upon her return to Singapore she took time out to be with her kids as well as pursue a PG Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management.

She has since rejoined the workforce with much enthusiasm and interest, hoping to share her industry experience with her students as well as experiences gained from living in different countries and wearing different hats.  

Shanthi enjoys travelling, music and the arts and always needs a good book for company!

She still enjoys studying and is on the quest for her next degree.

Ms Mariah Binti Rahim 

Mariah Binti Rahim

Mariah’s career in the hospitality industry started with The Westin Stamford and Westin Plaza.  Her experience encompassed various roles in the Rooms Division; from a Telephone Operator to Duty Manager and Assistant Housekeeper.

Her career took a turn when she joined SHATEC as a Training Officer.  That marked the beginning of her passion in training and education.  After 3 years away from the hotel scene, she decided to return as a Training Manager in The Fullerton Hotel Singapore.  Believing that education is an effective tool in molding future hoteliers, she then decides to join Temasek Polytechnic.

Nowadays, she prefers a less hectic lifestyle and spends quiet evenings at home with her family.  Her philosophy in life is “it all starts from a dream, and from a dream it will become a reality”.

Ms Selene Goh

A former student from TP's Diploma in Tourism Management and a graduate of Curtin University of Technology (Marketing and Management), Selene has been in the tourism business for 8 years with the latest appointment at the Singapore Tourism Board.

Before joining the Board, she spent a good part of her career with an international tour operator in the areas of travel operations and marketing. She took on a spectrum of responsibilities including the development of a new brand in Asia Pacific.

Selene held fond memories of TP and is glad to have the opportunity to mould young minds and impact lives, just as her lecturers did when she was a student.

On the personal front, Selene enjoys good food, travelling and aspires to become the next domestic goddess in baking.

Tay Kay Hwee

Before joining Temasek Polytechnic, Kay Hwee spent some 15 years in the travel industry.

She had experience in various aspects, ranging from Sales & Marketing to Product Development, Industry Training, Travel System and General Management. She was among the committee that organised the first NATAS Travel Fair in 1987.

Kay Hwee was once the Country Manager for New Zealand Tourism Board in Thailand. She brought Thai tourists to New Zealand and introduced new destinations such as Napier and Nelson to the market. With her rich experience, she joined TravelNet to manage its Travel Franchise and Training business. Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, she was with Pacific Century Cyber Works ( PCCW ) to promote an integrated travel software, named Gilboa.

From 2005 to 2011, Kay Hwee taught international students at The Tourism Academy @ Sentosa, a satellite campus of Temasek Polytechnic.

As a lecturer, she sees her role as a facilitator who evoke students’ curiousity throughquestioning; allow students to share their knowledge, and applying what they learnt  at work and in life.
