Overseas Study Trip to Melbourne, Australia

27 Diploma in Business students went on a study trip to Melbourne, Australia, jointly organised by Diploma in Business, Temasek Business School, Temasek Polytechnic, and IDP Education Australia Singapore. The students were hosted at the various universities in Melbourne including: University of Melbourne, RMIT International and Monash University. There were also talks and sharing sessions by: Manager, Marketing Development for South East Asia, of the Department of Primary Industries; Executive Director of Siemens Human Resources, and Chair of Global Industry Advisory Board at RMIT; Regional Marketing Manager of Victorian State Government; and an Entrepreneur of Student Housing in Australia. The students visited Penguin Parade, Victoria Market, Mornington Peninsula and other interesting places in Melbourne.
Overseas Study Trip to Sydney, Australia

Diploma in Business, Temasek Business School, Temasek Polytechnic, with IDP Education Australia Singapore, organised an overseas study trip for students to visit Sydney, Australia. The overseas study trip provided students withanopportunity to developglobal mindset, and to learn abouthigher education and culturein Australia. During thestudytrip, the Diploma in Businessstudentsvisited:The University of Sydney; Newcastle University; The University of Technology, Sydney; Macquarie University; International College of Management, Sydney; and University of New South Wales. The overseaslearning experience had given students a better understanding of cross-cultural learning and expanded their intellectualhorizon.

Diploma in Business has organised many Entrepreneurs' Forums over the years. Every recent Entrepreneurs' Forum was attended by over 450 students and staff.
The Entrepreneurs’ Forums give students a glimpse of the reality of the business world and inspire some students to become entrepreneurs in the future. The Entrepreneurs’ Forums also help to establish and strengthen the strategic bonds and partnerships between Temasek Polytechnic and our industry partners. | |

The Diploma in Business held its Business Day events at the Sports Hall and the Sports Complex. These orientation events serve to build bonds among Diploma in Business students and lecturers. The annual events were organised by the Business Interest Group (BIG), comprising Diploma in Business students.
The objectives of Business Day are :
- To strengthen the Diploma in Business identity and bonding among students and lecturers.
- To encourage informal interactions between students and lecturers.

Business Day programmes include Dance Work-out, Water Bombs, “Amazing” Race, Dressing Up Lecturers (as Pirates) Competition, “Fashion” Show, Scavenger Hunt, Final Clash etc.
Business Day provides a good opportunity for lecturers and students to interact in an informal and relaxed manner. Both lecturers and students enjoyed the Business Days.
The Business Interest Group is an interest group managed and run by Diploma in Business students under the supervision of lecturers. The Business Interest Group engages in a series of activities around the year including the organising of the following: - Business Days for Diploma in Business students.
- Shiseido Grooming Workshops.
- Dining and Etiquette Workshops.
- Image Workshops.
- Design and Printing of Diploma in Business T-shirts.
- Charity events.
- CCN fund raising.
- Fund raising for student overseas study trips.
The Business Interest Group rallied support from Temasek Polytechnic students to raise funds for the Toa Payoh Senior Citizens' Health Care Centre and the Geylang Senior Citizens' Health Care Centre. 360 Temasek Polytechnic student volunteers worked hard over a period of three days to collect old newspapers and clothes from the neighbourhood. | |

Business Forum 2008, jointly organised by Temasek Business School and Kelly Services was held on 13 Nov 2008. It was attended by about 230 participants, including distinguished industry guests and staff. The guest speaker was Mr. Lance Richards, Senior Director and Global Practice Leader for Kelly Services HR Consulting Group who shared about “The Disruptors : Seven Metatrends Impacting HR Today”. In addition, there was a panel discussion moderated by Mr. Jonas Ang, Senior HR Director of Kelly Services, Asia Pacific. Other panelists included Ms. Molly Yeo, Executive Director and Head of HR of ABN Amro Bank Singapore; Ms Juliana Ang, HR Director of Consumer Lifestyle, Philips Electronics, Singapore and Mr. Lance Richards. The Temasek Polytechnic Business Forum provides opportunities for greater interaction and networking among industry practitioners, educators and students, and helps participants to keep up-to-date with industry trends and developments. Diploma in Business and Business Communication lecturers organised the 1st Temasek Polytechnic Business Forum covering “The Changing Face of The Global Employee”. Attended by some 200 industry participants and students, the Forum provided a platform for active discussion between the audience and our invited speakers. Kelly Services is a Fortune 500 global staffing company with HQ in USA. Ms. Jaclyn Lee, Vice President, Human Resources, Corporate Human Resources, Cisco Security Pte Ltd, spoke at the Business Forum on “Inspiring Management & Value Creation in the Workforce”. In order to give Diploma in Business students a glimpse of the corporate world, covering Events Management, Conference Management, Media Relations, Public Relations, Career Planning and Development, Human Resource Management etc many industry speakers were invited to give specialised talks to Diploma in Business students including the following:
Ms Jasmine Tan, Singapore Tourism Board (STB). She was the main portfolio manager for the Medical/Healthcare/Life Sciences and Education-related conferences in Singapore. She is involved in bidding for and facilitating international conferences. She gave Diploma in Business students an idea of the opportunities and challenges in the world of conventions management and the role of the STB in making Singapore a major convention centre.
Ms Kathy O’Brien, Managing Editor of Red Shoe Communication. She was a branding consultant with more than 20 years’ experience spanning Asia, Europe and the USA. In her talks, she provided Diploma in Business students with an overview of the importance of media relations as publicity tools in events management, and on careers in public relations.
Ms Nancy Tan, Managing Director of Ace-Daytons Direct. Ms Tan was involved in many events including the launch of the Batam Industrial Park, the Ministry of Education’s IT in Education, 7th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery, IDA International Conference on desalination, Singapore-WHO Health Forum, the 9th GHTF Conference, 2nd APEC Meeting, and 3rd World Congress in Nephrology (estimated 5,000 participants). She spoke to Diploma In Business students on the opportunities and challenges in the world of events management and the considerations that go into marketing and executing events.
Mr Leslie Pillay, Director of HYDL Inc. He spoke to Diploma in Business students on corporate communication related topics.
Mr Vijay Pillai, Branch Manager (Finance & Banking Sectors) of Kelly Services. He spoke to students on Career Planning & Development and “How to secure that job”.
Mr Nguyen Huy Trung, Lecturer from National Economics University, Hanoi. He spoke to Diploma in Business students about Human Resource practices in Vietnam and how these practices were compared with those practices in Singapore.
Mr David Lock, Director of Coaching and Training, The Clarion Institute Pte Ltd, and Clarion Consultants Pte Ltd. He spoke to Diploma in Business students on "Arrows with Soul", a Human Resource Management related topic. Clarion Consultants was commissioned by Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) to look into Work Life Effectiveness.
Mr Elvin Tan, Branch Manager of Kelly Services Jurong East. He spoke to students on “Landing a job, surviving it and thriving in it”. He gave students insights on how to land a job, how to prepare for job interviews, and how to cope with office protocol and politics.
Diploma in Business regularly invites selected successful entrepreneurs to share his or her business model and management experience with our students. Successful entrepreneurs who have given talks to our students include: - Mr Michael Toh, President & CEO of Acepio Pte Ltd.

Ms Vanessa Lam, Founder and Director of Voxy Global Pte Ltd, was our guest speaker at the 2nd Entrepreneur's Talk. Though Ms Lam's business was mainly on ladies products, all students (male and female) were captivated by her passion and commitment to her business in nail manicure, hand and feet care, and the related products and accessories.
One male student commented “… … although they are ladies’ products I learned something on marketing strategies and how to reduce risk in a business e.g. to have innovative products …colours that changed with different lighting ”. Students were given samples of “magic” nail polish and hand products during the question and answer session. Students who were interested in running their own businesses commented that the talk was useful and offered them insights of the real world of running a business. One student remarked that Vanessa reinforced many things that they had learned in entrepreneurship lectures.
Voxy Global Pte Ltd commented that “I am very impressed with the learning and positive attitude of the TP Business student”.
