Major Projects

Our students begin to undertake industry-based projects even before they graduate. These projects are the sophisticated results of months of effort, and each of these projects will lead to the construction of a prototype or deal with real situations in industry. Working on these projects has given students the opportunity to synthesize and apply what they have learnt in order to provide solutions to business problems. In the process they have acquired lifelong skills and new knowledge as they worked collaboratively with fellow students and industry partners.

Read more about these exciting collaborations with real industry clients under Student Projects .

BIT Startup

When BIT juniors undergo a 16 weeks internship program attached to companies as business or IT executives, a group of 4 students chose the path less traveled and started their own IT consultancy firm instead. To-date, plusOne IT Consultancy has implemented 7 projects varying from Content Management to Customer Relationship Management Systems and has seen healthy revenue growth since week 8 of their stratup.

plusOne IT Consultancy provides open-source business and technological solutions to small and medium enterprises. “We penetrate the market by providing suitable open-source IT solutions customized to fit our clients' needs”, said Jeremy, Sales and Marketing Manager. Unlike proprietary software, open-source solutions are freely available on the internet for anyone who wishes to download, reuse, redistribute or even improve upon. A wide spectrum of open source solutions exist, ranging from Word Processors, Spreadsheets to Accounting and Enterprise Resource Planning systems.

Judging from customers' responses, the firm is certainly doing well. “We have gotten enquiries for not just our services, but also proposals for business ventures!” said Chief Technology Officer, Lim Jiayi.

Success Stories

Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD) Competition

Our students work hard – they listen, they express, they create, they experiment, and they learn. Their years of dedication and commitment all lead to the gratifying moment of graduation. But where do their diplomas lead them?

Led by our own lecturer, Phyllis Chong, the team that won the PAKDD Data Mining competition is none other than the BIT team of the School of Business. This has done Temasek Polytechnic proud, as we emerged the top Polytechnic team.
The winning team is one of two BIT teams that participated in the competition organized by the Singapore Institute of Statistics (SIS) and The Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence Association ( Singapore ) in conjunction with the 10th Pacific-Asia Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Conference. We were invited to participate in the competition by SAS Institute (Singapore) who is the Singapore academic participation coordinator and the main sponsor of the competition.

The competition requires participants to help an Asian telco operator to identify which of its existing customers are likely to switch to using their 3G mobile network. Teams are required to work with large data files comprising 20,000 2G network customers and 4,000 3G network customers described using more than 200 data fields.

The winning team consisted of 5 BIT students, Bevan Tan, Brandon Wong, Wan Ping Hao, Harjani Bharat G and Lim Siang Hoe. “I'm very proud of my students' achievement! They were able to apply what they have learned to solve a real-world problem.”, said Ms Chong. Bevan said “We have learned a lot from the competition. It takes a lot of determination and perseverance to participate in the competition. I'm glad we managed to provide a good estimate of the 2G customers who will switch to 3G services.” Brandon added “The way that the Business Intelligence subject was conducted online has equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills to win the competition. E-learning really works!”.

Given the positive learning experience and comments from students and judges, BIT looks forward to participating in future PAKDD data mining competitions.
